Traditional Japanese Reiki – Guest blog by Elaine Rainey MCMA

Elaine runs Reiki with Roots – an Edinburgh-based business offering individually-tailored Reiki sessions and accredited Reiki training.  Elaine’s focus is on supporting wellbeing in a simple, practical way using Jikiden Reiki – a traditional form of Reiki coming direct from Japan, with its cultural and spiritual roots intact.  Elaine is a certified Jikiden Reiki practitioner and an accredited Jikiden Reiki Teacher.   She is also a Full Member of The Complementary Medical Association.

Reiki – what exactly is it?!

Put simply, Reiki is a Japanese hand-healing system for the improvement of body and mind. It works to balance the body’s systems on all levels.  The effect of Reiki may be described as the gradual peeling away of the things that are holding us back – whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual – in order to reveal our whole, original selves.

A quick internet search will yield many testimonials from people who have benefited from Reiki – from reports of enhanced wound healing following sports injuries to increased emotional resilience during difficult times. Reiki has been used in integrative care programmes in some of the world’s leading hospitals with, for example, research indicating that Reiki can reduce pain and anxiety in cancer and HIV patients.

From a personal perspective, I first used Reiki as an integral part of a rehabilitation programme following a spinal injury sustained as the result of a mountain biking accident.  Over the years, Reiki has also provided me with a solid, centering practice which has given me the resilience to move more peacefully through life’s varying work and personal challenges. Despite the positives mentioned here, I’m not one to view Reiki as a ‘fix-all’ solution, but rather a kind of over-arching support to all the other positive self-care choices I make on a daily basis. And following periods where I’ve not been taking proper care of my health (we’ve all been there, right?), Reiki has been there to support my body in regaining balance.

Living a healthy, natural lifestyle – there’s no better city than Edinburgh!

Being a country girl at heart with an affinity for all things natural, I wasn’t sure how I would manage amongst the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh when I first moved here in 1999. Thankfully, Edinburgh had it all for me in terms of supporting my aim of living a natural, healthy and balanced lifestyle – the natural environment on our doorstep; a great wholefoods scene; shops selling natural home and body products that I didn’t even know existed; plus a vibrant community spirit within the many ‘villages’ that sit side-by-side in this beautiful city.  Immersing myself in Ashtanga yoga training with the former Yoga Centre on Melville Drive back in 2001 opened my eyes to the benefits of mind-body awareness practices and since then, I have never looked back. I finally took Reiki training in 2008 and in 2011, after building up the necessary treatment experience, I was accepted for Teacher Training with The Jikiden Reiki Institute in Kyoto, Japan.  Over the past 14 years, I have seen Edinburgh grow from strength to strength in terms of its provision for those wishing to live a more holistic life in the city. With Reiki with Roots, it is my aim to contribute to this vibrant, supportive culture and I do this work with all of my heart.
